      About Mississauga

A City That Stands On Its Own

Mississauga occupies a singular position in Canadian real estate. Often mentioned in the same breath as Toronto, it has long since outgrown that shadow — it is the seventh-largest city in Canada and third-largest in Ontario, with a thriving downtown core, world-class transit, and a lakefront that rivals any in the region.

Spanning roughly 300 square kilometres along the northern shore of Lake Ontario, Mississauga blends the convenience of a major urban centre with the character and greenery of distinct, livable neighbourhoods. Whether you are searching for a luxury waterfront property in Lorne Park, a condo steps from Square One, or a family home in Erin Mills, Mississauga delivers.

The city is home to the headquarters of major national and international companies, making it a natural draw for professionals relocating to the Greater Toronto Area. Add direct access to Pearson International Airport, the QEW, Highway 401, and the rapidly expanding Hazel McCallion LRT, and the location argument is essentially complete.

As your local Mississauga real estate agent, Tim Bishop brings firsthand knowledge of every corner of this city — helping buyers find the right neighbourhood and sellers position their homes to achieve maximum value in a competitive market.

      A Brief History

From Orchards & Lakeshore Cottages to Canada’s Sixth City

Understanding Mississauga’s past helps explain why its real estate continues to hold enduring appeal — and why certain neighbourhoods carry character that can’t be replicated.

      Pre-1600's

      Indigenous Peoples of the Lake

Before European contact, the land was home to Iroquoian- and Algonquian-speaking peoples. The Mississauga Nation — an Anishinaabe group — gave the city its name, meaning “many mouths of a river.”

      19th Century

      Agricultural Roots & Village Life

Most of present-day Mississauga was known as Toronto Township — a patchwork of fruit orchards, gristmills, and small lakefront villages including Port Credit and Streetsville, which grew along Credit River trade routes.

      1920's–1930's

      Cottages, Highways & Airports

Toronto’s elite built lakefront summer cottages along the shore. The Queen Elizabeth Way opened in 1935 — one of the world’s first controlled-access highways. In 1937, 1,411 acres were acquired for what would become Pearson International Airport.

      1960's–1970's

      Suburban Boom

Large-scale planned communities — Meadowvale, Erin Mills, and later Churchill Meadows — transformed former farmland into some of Canada’s largest suburban developments, drawing families westward from Toronto.

      1974

      City of Mississauga Incorporated

The amalgamation of Toronto Township with Port Credit, Streetsville, and other communities created the City of Mississauga. Hazel McCallion became Mayor in 1978, serving 36 years, and reshaped the city’s identity entirely.

      2000's–Present

      A City of Its Own

Mississauga has developed a true downtown core around Square One, attracted global corporate headquarters, and emerged as one of Canada’s most desirable real estate markets — with demand consistently outpacing supply.
